Vango Icarus 500

One of our favorite features is that the front door doubles up as a canopy with the fibreglass supplied porch poles. This feature was fantastic as it meant when the sun did finally come out we could side outside under this canopy drinking our orange juice thinking “I think this tent is a keeper!!”.

Vango Icarus 500 Tent, is it any good?

Once erected, this tent resembles the popular ‘tunnel’ style often adopted by tent manufacturers on their tents no bigger than this one. The actual material of the tent is Vango’s very own ‘Protex polyester’ flysheet, which has a HH rating of 2000mm. Not too shabby! This is clearly enough to keep out the rain.

Another nice feature of the tent’s construction is the fiberglass poles that are included. Lightweight and very strong, these poles coupled with the Protex flysheet will have you getting this tent up in no time at all! It only took us 8 minutes on the stop watch (2 of us), obviously we’re ‘veterans’ to the tent pitching scene as it were, but this isn’t a difficult tent to put up.

The Icarus 500 “in the Real World”

The tent has absolutely plenty of space for a weekend tent with the standard (and proven) layout of two bedrooms pods and small living area. There are plenty of storage pockets, and both the bedroom doors fold back into a side pockets stopping them getting too muddy. There is also a cool privacy divider between the two rooms. Don’t worry though – that can be removed if only a single pod is required.

Another great feature of the Vango Icarus 500 tent is that it incorporates Vango’s Tension Band System (TBS). If the wind picks up and the tent starts to flex in the wind by connecting the TBS bands inside the tent, this reduces this flex by connecting the sides to the top of the tent by the bands where the poles are located and indeed does vastly reduce flex.

The tent also benefits from two large windows either side facing the front to ensure you are able to view the sunny outdoors (hopefully!). Two doors also ensure good access in and out of the tent.
